Anti-Federalist vs. Ron DeSantis

Governor of Florida

Ron DeSantis has positioned himself as the champion of freedom and states' rights. In practice, he has concentrated extraordinary power in the Governor's office, overridden local governments, banned books, punished corporations for political speech, and used state authority to impose his social agenda on communities that disagreed. He is an authoritarian wearing a libertarian costume.

The Record

01

Local Governance

Ron DeSantis's Record

Overrode Miami-Dade County's COVID restrictions. Preempted local minimum wage ordinances. Seized control of Disney's special district for political retribution. Removed elected prosecutors who disagreed with him.

Anti-Federalist Position

County and municipal governments have sovereign authority over their own communities. No governor should have the power to override local elected officials.

DeSantis removed a twice-elected State Attorney for announcing he would not prosecute certain cases. He dissolved Reedy Creek — Disney's self-governing district — because Disney criticized his legislation. This is political retribution, not limited government.

02

Free Speech

Ron DeSantis's Record

Signed the "Stop WOKE Act" restricting workplace and educational discussion of race. Banned books from school libraries. Punished Disney for exercising political speech. Created a speech-chilling environment while claiming to defend free expression.

Anti-Federalist Position

Free speech is absolute. The government does not get to decide which ideas are acceptable. Communities decide what happens in their own schools and workplaces.

Florida banned 1,600 books in a single school year. Teachers were afraid to display classroom libraries. This is not freedom — it is state-imposed intellectual conformity.

03

Education

Ron DeSantis's Record

State-mandated curriculum restrictions. "Don't Say Gay" legislation. Rejected AP African American Studies. Installed political allies on university boards to control higher education.

Anti-Federalist Position

Full local school board autonomy. Parents and teachers in each community decide curriculum — not the Governor's office.

DeSantis replaced the New College of Florida's board of trustees with political allies and hired a political operative as president. He is using state power to control what people learn and think.

04

Executive Overreach

Ron DeSantis's Record

Used emergency powers extensively. Created state election police. Flew migrants to Martha's Vineyard using state funds as a political stunt. Signed laws granting himself extraordinary appointment powers.

Anti-Federalist Position

Emergency powers should expire automatically. No executive should have standing police forces. State funds should serve state residents, not political theater.

DeSantis spent $12 million in Florida taxpayer money to fly 50 migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard. The migrants were not in Florida. The money served no Florida interest.

05

Corporate Punishment

Ron DeSantis's Record

Punished Disney for political speech by dissolving their special district and targeting them with legislation. Used state regulatory power as a weapon against political opponents.

Anti-Federalist Position

The government should not punish or reward corporations based on their political speech. Corporate-state fusion is dangerous in both directions — whether it's cronyism or retribution.

Using government power to punish a corporation for speech you disagree with is textbook authoritarianism. It does not matter that the target is Disney. The principle matters.

The Verdict

DeSantis proves that "states' rights" without local autonomy is just authoritarianism at a different altitude. He concentrated power in Tallahassee, overrode local communities, and used state machinery to enforce his personal ideology. The Anti-Federalists didn't fight centralized power in London and Philadelphia just to hand it to state governors.
